Submission on the Proposed Integrated Accessibility Standard
Attached below are two submissions prepared by ARCH in September 2010 and March 2011 in response to the Ministry of Community and Social Services Proposed Integrated Accessibility Standard (Integrated Standard). The Integrated Standard is intended to address barriers facing persons with disabilities in transportation, information and communication, and employment. In ARCH's opinion the proposed standard is very weak and will do little to achieve the goal of an accessible Ontario by 2025. In particular, ARCH was concerned that the proposed standard ignored all the work completed by the Accessibility Committees; would not meet the expected purpose of a standard; had too many exemptions and the language of the standard was weak and permissive rather than creating clear obligations that could be monitored.
