United Nations Oversight

The Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) is an international human rights law that protects and promotes the rights and freedoms of persons with disabilities. Canada ratified the CRPD in 2010.

The UN Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities is a group of independent experts who monitor the implementation of the CRPD. The UN Committee reviews Canada’s implementation of the CRPD regularly, usually every 4 years.

As part of this review, Canada submits a report to the UN Committee on steps it has taken to implement the CRPD. Disabled persons organizations (DPOs), civil society organizations (CSOs), and human rights commissions can also submit reports to the UN Committee. The Committee reviews these reports and meets with Canadian government representatives and DPO representatives. The Committee then makes recommendations to the Government of Canada and suggests things the government can do to better implement the CRPD in Canada.

To read all the documents sent to the Committee for all reviews of Canada’s implementation of the CRPD, go to: https://tbinternet.ohchr.org/_layouts/15/TreatyBodyExternal/Countries.aspx?CountryCode=CAN&Lang=EN then select “CRPD-Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities” in the list.
