ARCH Celebrates National AccessAbility Week

ARCH is excited to celebrate this week with a number of events: To open the week, on Monday, May 28 ARCH will be launching its Blog with an introductory post about National AccessAbility Week. Starting June 1, ARCH will post an entry every other Friday on issues related to disability rights, the legal profession and matters that fall in between.

On May 31, ARCH lawyer Kerri Joffe will host a seminar for the legal clinic system regarding the federal accessibility legislation expected to be tabled this June. This webinar will discuss the expected scope of the legislation and the role that disability communities have played in its development. ARCH also wants to discuss how the federal accessibility legislation may be relevant for legal clinics. This session is only available to legal clinics across Ontario.

On June 3, 2018, I will be sitting on a panel at the Toronto ReelAbilities Film Festival, a festival that works to bring together the community to promote awareness and appreciation of lives, stories and art of those with disabilities. The panel is called Defiant Lives: Stories of Disability Rights and will follow the screening of the film Defiant Lives by Director Sarah Barton.

Continuing into the next week, on June 5, ARCH will be hosting its annual Access Awareness event with the Law Society of Ontario. The theme of this year’s event is on the importance of privacy in the lives of persons with disabilities. The event will include a panel discussion providing practice tips for lawyers on how to respect the privacy rights of clients and colleagues with disabilities. The panel speakers will also discuss developments in the case law relating to the privacy rights of persons with disabilities, explore the privacy considerations that arise for persons with disabilities in particular contexts, and discuss best practices in the employment context.

Be sure to check out ARCH’s social media accounts throughout the week for a variety of quotes, tips and facts surrounding what accessibility means to ARCH and our communities, and ways to create accessible and inclusive environments for all.
